Virginia McConnell

When I tell someone that I make art dolls, the response is often a cocked head, a puzzled smile, and a polite question: “What is an art doll?” The technical answer is that an art doll is an original, one-of-a-kind, multimedia figurative sculpture. But for me, the real answer is that an art doll is an expression of someone’s story. I am endlessly inspired by the people I see every day. I am fascinated by their expressions, their mannerisms, the way that time writes on their faces and bodies. I like to watch them in unguarded moments as they go about their daily lives, and I can’t help wondering about them: what experiences they have had, what they believe, how they came to be who they are. I can’t resist making up stories about them. My art dolls tell these stories. Each of my dolls is an individual with a point of view and a personality and a past.
